Program:
Departure is scheduled for 3.30pm for the Ruins of Gede: an Arab-Swahili city mysteriously abandoned in 1400.
Popular tradition makes this location magical and at the same time feared, to the point that none of the locals would enter the ruins after sunset...
The excavations brought to light Ming porcelain, glassware and glazed terracotta shutters from the 13th century, the date of the city's foundation.
For completely unknown reasons this city was abandoned in the 17th or 18th century, because the sea receded or due to the invasions of the Galla tribe from the North.
The ruins are surrounded by lush vegetation with numerous baobabs.
The palaces are built with lime made from coral and earth.
During the walk, which lasts about 90 minutes, there are monkeys and baboons screaming from the treetops, lizards moving quickly in the undergrowth and large butterflies fluttering among the ruins.
The return to Watamu is scheduled for 5.30/6.00 pm
