Whit a total area of 21,812 km², Tsavo is the largest natural park in the country. It belongs to a system of adjacent parks that includes the Chyulu Hills National Park, the Ngai Ndethia Nature Reserve and the South Kitui Nature Reserve, for a total area of over 23,000 km² (equal to the whole of Tuscany). The park was opened in April 1948 and in May of the same year it was divided, for administrative purposes, into Tsavo East National Park and Tsavo West National Park.
The park takes its name from the Tsavo River, which flows through it. The fauna includes jackals, yellow baboons, buffaloes, African owls, dik-diks, galagos, striped warblers, caracals, wild cats, cheetahs, wild dogs, African dormice, blue coels, warblers, elands, elephants, otocyons, genets, gherenucs, giraffes , African hares, Cape jumping hares, Coke's hartebeest, East African hedgehogs, spotted hyenas, striped hyenas, procavias, tree procavias, impala, crested proteles, knapsacks, lesser kudus, leopards, lions, mongooses, dwarf mongooses, chlorocebies , Sykes monkeys, oryxes, pangolins, porcupines, bamboo rats, giant rats, hairless heterocephalians, honey badgers, redneck deer, black rhinos, servals, ground squirrels, suni, warthogs, waterbucks, common zebras, zebras by Grévy and damalisks by Hunter. The vast avifauna includes ostriches, weaver birds, kingfishers, secretaries and herons.
Program:
Day 1
- Early morning departure from your village or home.
To get to the park, continue along a red dirt track
of about 100 km that crosses forests and villages of indescribable charm and beauty.
- You arrive at the entrance of the Sala Gate park around 09:30.
First stop at the Galana River, where you can watch crocodiles.
Once you enter, start the GAME DRIVE to see as many animals as possible,
in the park you will meet: lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, dik-diks, antelopes,
water antelopes, cheetahs, leopards, hippopotamuses and other savanna animals.
- At 13:00 then you arrive at the lodge, or Check-in field,
(it is recommended to bring your passport) lunch and rest.
Relax in the pool to admire the animals that are drinking nearby
pool of water.
- In the afternoon, after a short rest, we start again for the Game Drive.
Visit, if the game drive allows it, Lugard Fall's Falls, spectacular waterfalls unique in the world, where the river
Galana disappears in the midst of colored and polished rocks. Safari until sunset, return to the lodge, dinner, quiet and
relaxing after dinner to admire the animals that are watering at the nearby pool, and overnight stay.
Day 2
- Alarm at 6:30am, 6:30am breakfast, departure at 7:00am visit, if you want, to a Maasai village
where you can watch their dances, buy souvenirs and visit their homes (manyatta).
After visiting the village, departure for the third GAME DRIVE to see as many animals as possible.
Safari until 10:30/11:00, since the ticket paid for admission to the park is valid for 24 hours.
